  • This workshop guided entrepreneurs from rough overviews to investor-relevant pitches.

Chicago, IL. October 14, 2021. Content Carnivores, a digital marketing agency, participated in the week 4 "Marketing and Message: Getting, Keeping, and Growing Customers" session of the UIC CO.STARTERS Fall 2021 Cohort. This Cohort brings entrepreneurial minds together and offers a space to learn how to create a sustainable business from the ground up. The program was led by Melissa Maderia, Scientific Collaboration Director at the University of Illinois Chicago, and Tamira Davis, Senior Financial Coordinator for the Office of Technology Management at UIC.

The workshop featured real-world examples from the experiences of analogous entrepreneurs in analogous categories such as biotech, medtech, wellness and geotech. A Content Carnivores client, Pacylex, was used as an example to demonstrate how the consistency of message and sticking to a marketing plan works. Pacylex is an oncology company that emerged from the University of Alberta tech transfer and continued its path to the incubator. Recent milestones include their Series A capital raise and their first patients to participate in human clinical trials. This is just one example of how marketing messaging is vital for forward growth.

Each entrepreneur who attended the workshop was tasked to prepare a 15-word elevator pitch about their company, product, or service. The Content Carnivores team, Chelli Miller and Jeff Walker evaluated the pitches and gave structural guidance relevant to each business topic.

"The hardest thing for an entrepreneur to figure out is a way to condense all the knowledge in their heads about their work into two or three sentences," Jeff Walker, CEO of Content Carnivores said.

"Entrepreneurs need to think of it as like a dating profile. Not too much, not too abstract, but definitely something that makes an investor or partner want to learn more," said Chelli Miller, VP of Client Services at Content Carnivores.

This workshop honed in on tactical skills that all entrepreneurs should have in the back of their minds, whether just beginning their company's journey or having a well-established business. Company messaging may change over time but having a focused mission is essential for all parties involved.

“Chelli and Jeff at Content Carnivores were both extremely helpful in refining the Message for the new business venture participants in the CO.STARTERS cohort," said Melissa Maderia, Scientific Collaboration Director at the University of Illinois Chicago. "We look forward to seeing their presentations evolve as we approach the final pitch day on December 2nd."
